I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
Study: Paul begins by urging believers to prioritize various forms of prayer—supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving—for all people. This comprehensive call reflects God’s inclusive concern for humanity and the church’s role in upholding others through prayer. Recognizing prayer as foundational, Paul emphasizes its power to support the community and influence societal peace, reminding us that prayer is an active expression of love and dependence on God.
1 Timothy 2:2
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
Study: Praying specifically for kings and those in authority reveals Paul’s awareness of the political realities affecting the church. By encouraging prayers for leaders, Paul connects godly living with societal stability, showing that peaceful conditions enable believers to live quietly and honorably. This instruction underscores the church’s responsibility to seek God’s guidance for rulers, promoting an environment where faith can flourish without persecution.
1 Timothy 2:3
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
Study: Paul affirms that such prayers are not only beneficial but also pleasing to God our Savior. This highlights God’s character as one who values peace and godliness among His people. The phrase 'good and acceptable' reminds believers that their prayers align with God’s will, encouraging confidence and persistence in intercession as a vital spiritual discipline.
1 Timothy 2:4
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
Study: God’s desire for all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of truth reveals His universal grace and redemptive purpose. This verse connects prayer with God’s heart for salvation, emphasizing that the gospel is for everyone. It challenges believers to pray with hope and urgency, knowing that God’s will is for no one to perish but to be transformed by the truth.
1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Study: This verse declares the foundational Christian truth that there is one God and one mediator between God and men—Jesus Christ. By identifying Christ as 'the man,' Paul emphasizes His incarnation and unique role in bridging the divine and human. This central doctrine shapes the chapter’s focus on salvation and prayer, reminding believers that access to God comes only through Christ’s mediation.
1 Timothy 2:6
Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Study: Christ’s self-giving as a ransom for all underscores the cost and scope of salvation. The term 'ransom' evokes the Old Testament concept of redemption, showing Jesus as the one who liberates humanity from sin’s bondage. The phrase 'to be testified in due time' points to the unfolding revelation of Christ’s work, encouraging patience and faith in God’s redemptive timeline.
1 Timothy 2:7
Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
Study: Paul identifies his calling as preacher, apostle, and teacher to the Gentiles, affirming his authority and mission. His insistence on truthfulness 'in Christ' reinforces the reliability of his message. This verse situates the chapter’s instructions within Paul’s apostolic ministry, highlighting the importance of sound teaching grounded in faith and truth.
1 Timothy 2:8
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
Study: Paul commands that men pray everywhere, lifting holy hands without anger or doubting, emphasizing purity and sincerity in worship. The gesture of lifting hands was a common posture of prayer, symbolizing openness to God. Avoiding wrath and doubt reflects the need for a peaceful heart and confident faith, ensuring that prayer honors God and fosters unity.
1 Timothy 2:9
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
Study: Women are instructed to dress modestly with shamefacedness and sobriety, contrasting cultural practices of elaborate hairstyles and costly jewelry. This guidance reflects the covenant value of humility and godliness over external appearance. By focusing on inward character rather than outward adornment, Paul encourages women to express their faith through modesty and reverence.
1 Timothy 2:10
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
Study: Good works are presented as the true adornment for women professing godliness, linking faith with practical holiness. This shifts attention from superficial beauty to actions that reflect Christ’s character. It teaches that godliness is demonstrated through service and love, reinforcing the New Covenant’s emphasis on transformed lives.
1 Timothy 2:11
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
Study: Women are called to learn in silence with all subjection, highlighting the importance of respectful learning within the church community. This instruction reflects the cultural and theological context of orderly worship and teaching authority. It encourages a posture of humility and receptiveness, essential for spiritual growth and unity.
1 Timothy 2:12
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
Study: Paul forbids women from teaching or usurping authority over men, grounding this in the created order and the need for church order. This directive addresses specific challenges in the Ephesian church and aims to preserve harmony and doctrinal purity. It underscores the importance of respecting God’s design for leadership roles within the body of Christ.
1 Timothy 2:13
For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
Study: The reference to Adam being formed first, then Eve, roots the teaching in the creation narrative, emphasizing God’s intentional design. This order serves as a theological basis for the roles and responsibilities outlined in the church. It reminds believers that God’s purposes in creation continue to inform His instructions for worship and community life.
1 Timothy 2:14
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Study: Paul notes that Adam was not deceived, but the woman was, linking the teaching on authority to the fall and deception. This historical detail explains the origin of sin’s disruption in relationships and supports the call for order in the church. It encourages humility and vigilance against deception, pointing to the need for Christ’s redemption.
1 Timothy 2:15
Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
Study: The promise that women shall be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, holiness, and sobriety, connects salvation with faithful living in their God-ordained roles. This verse balances the previous restrictions with hope and affirmation of women’s spiritual significance. It highlights the covenantal value of faithfulness and holiness as the true path to salvation.
