Verse-by-Verse Study

Genesis 22:1

And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

Study: God tests Abraham after years of walking with Him. This was not a temptation to sin, but a test that would reveal the depth of Abraham’s faith. Abraham’s response, “Behold, here I am,” shows readiness, humility, and availability before God.

Genesis 22:2

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

Study: God’s command touches the deepest place in Abraham’s heart. Isaac is the promised son, the son Abraham loves, and the child through whom the covenant promise would continue. This test asks whether Abraham trusts the Giver more than the gift.

Genesis 22:3

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

Study: Abraham obeys without delay. He rises early, prepares the wood, and begins the journey. The verse does not say Abraham understood everything, but it clearly shows that he trusted God enough to move forward in obedience.

Genesis 22:4

Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

Study: The journey lasted three days, giving Abraham time to think, grieve, and continue trusting God. Faith is not only shown in one emotional moment. It is also shown through steady obedience over time.

Genesis 22:5

And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

Study: Abraham says that he and Isaac will return. This reveals his confidence that God would somehow keep His promise. Abraham calls the act worship, showing that surrender to God is part of true worship.

Genesis 22:6

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

Study: Isaac carries the wood for the offering. This detail points forward to Jesus Christ carrying the cross. The phrase “they went both of them together” shows the unity of father and son as they continue toward the place of sacrifice.

Genesis 22:7

And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

Study: Isaac notices that the lamb is missing. His question carries deep meaning throughout Scripture. Humanity’s greatest need is for God to provide the sacrifice that we could never provide for ourselves.

Genesis 22:8

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

Study: Abraham speaks one of the great statements of faith in Genesis. He does not know all the details, but he knows the character of God. Ultimately, this points forward to Jesus, the Lamb of God provided for sinners.

Genesis 22:9

And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

Study: Abraham reaches the place God appointed and prepares the altar. Isaac is placed upon the wood. The scene is intense, but it shows Abraham’s complete surrender and Isaac’s quiet submission in the hands of his father.

Genesis 22:10

And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

Study: Abraham’s obedience reaches the final moment. He has not withheld even what is most precious to him. This verse reveals faith that trusts God beyond what the eyes can see or the mind can fully understand.

Genesis 22:11

And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

Study: God intervenes at exactly the right moment. The repeated name shows urgency and care. Abraham again responds with availability, showing that his heart remains attentive to God even in the most difficult moment of the test.

Genesis 22:12

And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

Study: God stops Abraham and makes clear that Isaac is not to be harmed. The test has revealed Abraham’s reverence and trust. Abraham feared God in the sense that he honored God above every earthly attachment.

Genesis 22:13

And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

Study: God provides a ram as a substitute for Isaac. The ram dies in Isaac’s place. This is one of the clearest pictures in Genesis of substitution, pointing forward to Christ who would die in the place of sinners.

Genesis 22:14

And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Study: Abraham names the place Jehovahjireh, meaning the Lord will provide. Abraham learned that God sees the need before the moment arrives. The Lord’s provision is not late, lacking, or accidental.

Genesis 22:15

And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

Study: God speaks to Abraham again after the ram is provided. The test is complete, but God now confirms the covenant promise. Abraham’s obedience becomes the setting for a renewed declaration of blessing.

Genesis 22:16

And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:

Study: God swears by Himself because there is no higher authority. He highlights Abraham’s willingness to withhold nothing. The covenant rests on God’s own faithfulness, not human weakness.

Genesis 22:17

That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

Study: God reaffirms the promise to multiply Abraham’s seed. The imagery of stars and sand shows abundance beyond human counting. Even after the test, the promise remains secure and untouched.

Genesis 22:18

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Study: This promise points forward to Jesus Christ, the promised seed through whom all nations would be blessed. Abraham’s obedience fits within God’s greater plan to bring blessing and salvation to the world.

Genesis 22:19

So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.

Study: Abraham returns from the mountain with Isaac alive and God’s promise reaffirmed. The journey that began with a test ends with provision, worship, and renewed confidence in God’s faithfulness.

Genesis 22:20

And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;

Study: The chapter shifts to Abraham’s extended family. This may seem like a simple family update, but it prepares the story for what comes next, especially the future introduction of Rebekah.

Genesis 22:21

Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,

Study: Nahor’s family line is listed by name. Scripture often records genealogies because God works through real families, real generations, and real history to carry His plan forward.

Genesis 22:22

And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

Study: Bethuel is included in this family line. His name becomes important because he will be connected to Rebekah, who becomes Isaac’s wife. God is already preparing the next step in the covenant story.

Genesis 22:23

And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

Study: Rebekah is introduced before her role becomes clear. This is a quiet but important detail. God’s provision for Isaac’s future is already being prepared, even before Abraham or Isaac sees it.

Genesis 22:24

And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.

Study: The genealogy closes with additional descendants of Nahor. After the intense test on Mount Moriah, the chapter ends by showing that God’s larger plan is continuing through families and generations.

Chapter Synopsis

Genesis 22 records one of the greatest tests of faith in Scripture. God commands Abraham to take Isaac, the promised son whom he loves, and offer him on a mountain in the land of Moriah. Abraham obeys, trusting God even when the command is difficult to understand. Isaac carries the wood, asks where the lamb is, and Abraham declares that God will provide. At the final moment, God stops Abraham and provides a ram caught in a thicket as a substitute for Isaac. Abraham names the place Jehovahjireh, meaning the Lord will provide. God then reaffirms His covenant promise, declaring that Abraham’s seed will be multiplied and that all nations will be blessed through his seed. The chapter closes with the family line of Nahor, preparing the way for Rebekah’s future role in Isaac’s life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the God who provides. Help me trust You when I do not understand the test in front of me. Teach me to obey with faith, surrender what I am holding too tightly, and believe that Your promises are always secure. Open my eyes to Your provision and help me remember that You gave the greatest sacrifice through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Application

Trust God in the Test

Abraham obeyed even when the command was difficult to understand. Ask God to help you trust His character when your circumstances do not make sense.

Hold God’s Gifts with Open Hands

Isaac was Abraham’s promised son, yet Abraham still surrendered him to God. Do not let the blessing become more important than the One who gave it.

Believe That God Will Provide

Abraham declared that God would provide before he saw the ram. Faith trusts God’s provision before the answer is visible.

Remember the Substitute

The ram died in Isaac’s place, pointing forward to Jesus Christ. Remember that salvation is based on what God has provided, not what we can earn.

Obey God’s Voice

God reaffirmed His promise after Abraham obeyed. Obedience does not earn God’s love, but it does reveal trust in His word.
