Book of Jude Hub

The book of Jude is a brief but urgent letter written to warn believers about false teachers infiltrating the church and to encourage them to defend the true faith. It highlights the importance of contending for the faith once delivered to the saints while reminding readers of God's mercy and judgment.

An ancient scroll with the name Jude, surrounded by imagery of a small group of early Christians facing shadowy figures representing false teachers

Book of Jude Overview

Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, writes to urge believers to defend the faith against certain ungodly people who have secretly slipped in among them, distorting God's grace into a license for immorality and denying Jesus Christ.

The letter recalls examples of divine judgment on rebellious angels, the ancient world’s flood, and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah to warn of the certainty of judgment on these false teachers and their corrupt influence.

Despite the warnings, Jude encourages believers to build themselves up in their most holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, keep themselves in God’s love, and show mercy to those who doubt, ending with a doxology praising God’s ability to keep them from falling.

Who Wrote Jude?

The author identifies himself as Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, traditionally understood to be Jude, the brother of Jesus and James, leader of the Jerusalem church.

Jude was written to a group of early Christians facing infiltration by false teachers who threatened the purity of the church’s faith and practice, likely in the late first century.

Knowing the author’s close relationship to Jesus and the early church leadership helps readers grasp the authority behind the urgent call to defend the faith and the pastoral heart urging perseverance amid false teaching.
