Book of Luke Overview

Luke's Gospel is the longest of the four canonical Gospels and is part one of a two-volume work, with Acts as the sequel. It is addressed to Theophilus and aims to provide an accurate and comprehensive narrative of Jesus' life and teachings, emphasizing historical context and eyewitness testimony. Luke carefully traces Jesus' genealogy back to Adam, underscoring the universal significance of His mission.

The book features unique parables such as the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, which illustrate themes of mercy, forgiveness, and the reversal of social expectations. Luke also highlights Jesus' interactions with women, Samaritans, and sinners, portraying a kingdom built on grace and inclusion rather than ethnic or religious privilege. The role of the Holy Spirit and prayer are prominent throughout the narrative.

Who Wrote Luke?

Traditionally attributed to Luke, a physician and companion of the Apostle Paul, this Gospel reflects a well-educated author with a keen interest in historical detail and orderly presentation. Luke's background as a Gentile Christian is suggested by his emphasis on the universality of the Gospel message and his careful attention to the broader Greco-Roman world.

Scholars note Luke's use of sources, including the Gospel of Mark and a hypothetical sayings source called Q, as well as unique material known as the L source. His writing style is polished and literary, indicating a deliberate effort to create a coherent and persuasive narrative for a primarily Gentile audience.
