Who Wrote Matthew?
Discover who wrote the Gospel of Matthew, why it was written, and why its authorship matters to your Bible study.
The Gospel of Matthew has traditionally been attributed to Matthew, also called Levi, one of Jesus' twelve apostles and a former tax collector whom Jesus personally called to follow Him (Matthew 9:9). Although the Gospel does not explicitly name its author, the earliest Christian writers consistently identified Matthew as its author, and this view has been accepted by the church throughout history.
Matthew wrote primarily for a Jewish audience to demonstrate that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah foretold throughout the Old Testament. More than any other Gospel, Matthew repeatedly connects Jesus' life, teachings, death, and resurrection to Old Testament prophecy, showing that God's promises were fulfilled in Christ and that the Kingdom of Heaven had arrived.
As you study Matthew chapter by chapter, you'll see how this Gospel bridges the Old and New Testaments, revealing Jesus as the long-awaited King, the fulfillment of Scripture, and the Savior of the world. Understanding who wrote Matthew and why he wrote it provides valuable context for every chapter that follows.
