Study: Even the heart of a king is under the LORD’s rule. Spiritually, no earthly authority is beyond God’s hand. Practically, this gives believers confidence to pray, trust God’s providence, and remember that powerful people are not more powerful than the LORD.
Proverbs 21:2
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.
Study: People often justify their own choices, but the LORD weighs the heart. Spiritually, God sees motives, not just actions. Practically, wisdom requires humility, self-examination, and a willingness to let God correct what seems right in our own eyes.
Proverbs 21:3
To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
Study: God values justice and righteous judgment more than outward religious acts. Spiritually, worship without obedience is empty. Practically, a person cannot cover injustice with spiritual appearance; the LORD desires a life that does what is right.
Proverbs 21:4

Proverbs 21:24
Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.
Study: The scorner is marked by pride, haughtiness, and wrath. Spiritually, pride does not stay hidden; it becomes a way of dealing with people. Practically, when anger is fueled by arrogance, it creates a reputation that exposes the heart.
Proverbs 21:25
The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

Proverbs 21:29
A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way.
Study: The wicked harden themselves, but the upright give attention to their path. Spiritually, stubbornness resists correction while uprightness seeks direction. Practically, wisdom does not double down in pride; it adjusts the way according to truth.

The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.
Study: Preparation matters, but final safety comes from the LORD. Spiritually, trust belongs in God, not merely in strategy or strength. Practically, plan wisely, prepare diligently, but do not place confidence in preparation more than in the LORD.
Chapter Synopsis
Proverbs 21 teaches that the LORD rules over kings, weighs the hearts of men, and values justice and judgment more than empty sacrifice. The chapter warns against pride, lying, violence, selfish pleasure, laziness, greed, false witness, and wicked religious appearance. Solomon contrasts the diligent with the hasty, the righteous with the wicked, the generous with the greedy, and the wise with those who trust in strength alone. The chapter also teaches that wisdom guards the mouth, receives instruction, cares for the poor, pursues righteousness and mercy, and understands that no counsel can stand against the LORD. It closes by reminding the reader that preparation is important, but safety belongs to the LORD.
Prayer
Lord, remind me that every heart is in Your hand and that You weigh my heart more deeply than I can. Teach me to do justice and judgment, not merely appear religious. Remove pride, deceit, greed, laziness, careless speech, and selfish desire from me. Help me pursue righteousness and mercy, hear the cry of the poor, guard my mouth, work diligently, give generously, and trust You above my own preparation. Let my confidence rest in You, because safety is of the LORD. Amen.
