Verse by Verse Study
Proverbs 4:1
Verse Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
Study Wisdom begins with listening. This is more than hearing words—it is giving attention with humility. Godly instruction requires a willing heart that wants understanding.
Proverbs 4:2
Verse For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
Study God’s instruction is good, trustworthy, and life-giving. It is not opinion or suggestion. Forsaking it leads to instability, but keeping it preserves the soul.
Proverbs 4:3
Verse For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
Study Solomon recalls his own upbringing. Wisdom is being passed down through generations. This verse reminds us that godly truth is meant to be received and then handed on faithfully.
Proverbs 4:4
Verse He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
Study Wisdom must be retained in the heart, not merely remembered in the mind. Obedience leads to life, protection, and fullness. God’s commands are not restrictive—they are life-giving.
Proverbs 4:5
Verse Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
Study Wisdom must be pursued actively. You do not drift into wisdom. It must be sought intentionally, held tightly, and not abandoned when other voices compete for attention.
Proverbs 4:6
Verse Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
Study Wisdom is pictured as a faithful guardian. If you cling to wisdom, she preserves and keeps you. Abandoning wisdom removes an important layer of protection from your life.
Proverbs 4:7
Verse Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Study Wisdom is the highest priority. Whatever else you pursue in life, do not neglect understanding. Success without wisdom will eventually collapse under its own weakness.
Proverbs 4:8
Verse Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
Study Wisdom elevates the life of the one who embraces her. Honor and promotion come not from self-promotion, but from walking in wisdom that shapes character and choices.
Proverbs 4:9
Verse She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
Study Wisdom adorns a life with grace and dignity. This is not worldly glamour, but the beauty of a life shaped by God’s order, truth, and righteousness.
Proverbs 4:10
Verse Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
Study Receiving wisdom leads to stability and often to longer, healthier living. Wise people avoid many destructive patterns that shorten peace, joy, and usefulness.
Proverbs 4:11
Verse I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.
Study Wisdom is not abstract. It gives direction. Godly teaching leads people into right paths—paths that are straight, safe, and aligned with God’s will.
Proverbs 4:12
Verse When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
Study Walking in wisdom brings freedom and steadiness. It removes many unnecessary obstacles and keeps a person from needless stumbling in life.
Proverbs 4:13
Verse Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.
Study Instruction is not optional. It is a lifeline. Letting go of wisdom opens the door to confusion and damage, but holding onto it preserves life.
Proverbs 4:14
Verse Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
Study Wisdom sets strong boundaries. Do not enter wicked paths at all. The safest response to evil is refusal at the door, not negotiation once inside.
Proverbs 4:15
Verse Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.
Study This is forceful language for a reason. Do not flirt with temptation. Turn away quickly and decisively. Wisdom knows that distance is often the safest form of victory.
Proverbs 4:16
Verse For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.
Study Some people become so shaped by evil that harm becomes their lifestyle. Wisdom warns us not only about sin, but about the company of those who live to spread it.
Proverbs 4:17
Verse For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.
Study Wickedness becomes nourishment to those who embrace it. This verse shows how deeply evil can shape appetites, habits, and identity when it is continually fed.
Proverbs 4:18
Verse But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
Study The righteous path grows clearer and brighter over time. Spiritual maturity is progressive. As a person walks with God, clarity, light, and stability increase.
Proverbs 4:19
Verse The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
Study Darkness produces confusion. The wicked often do not even understand why they keep falling. Separation from wisdom blinds a person to the real source of their problems.
Proverbs 4:20
Verse My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
Study Wisdom must be given attention repeatedly. This is a call to ongoing listening, not a one-time hearing. The wise stay teachable.
Proverbs 4:21
Verse Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
Study God’s words must remain close—seen, remembered, and treasured. Wisdom must be kept both before the eyes and within the heart.
Proverbs 4:22
Verse For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
Study God’s Word brings life and health. Wisdom has real effects on the whole person—mind, soul, direction, and even physical well-being in the sense of wholeness and stability.
Proverbs 4:23
Verse Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Study This is the center of the chapter. The heart must be guarded because everything flows from it—choices, desires, words, habits, and direction. The condition of the heart shapes the condition of the life.
Proverbs 4:24
Verse Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
Study Speech reveals the heart. Deceitful, twisted, and perverse speech must be removed. Wisdom purifies language by first shaping the inner life.
Proverbs 4:25
Verse Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Study Wisdom requires focus. Do not live distracted by side paths, temptations, or competing voices. Keep your gaze fixed on the right way.
Proverbs 4:26
Verse Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
Study Think carefully about where you are going. Wisdom makes deliberate choices. A life that is established is not random—it is intentional and rooted in truth.
Proverbs 4:27
Verse Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
Study Stay steady on the right path. Do not drift into compromise, distraction, pride, or temptation. Wisdom walks straight and removes its feet from evil quickly.
