Book of Leviticus Overview

Leviticus continues naturally after Exodus. After the tabernacle is completed and the glory of the LORD fills it, Leviticus explains how Israel is to approach, worship, and live before a holy God.

The book teaches about sacrifice, priesthood, cleansing, holiness, appointed feasts, and covenant faithfulness. Though many readers find Leviticus difficult, it reveals the seriousness of sin, the mercy of atonement, and God’s desire for His people to be holy because He is holy.

Who Wrote Leviticus?

Understanding the authorship and setting of Leviticus helps us read the book in the larger story of Scripture.

Traditionally, Moses is understood as the author of Leviticus, along with the rest of the first five books of the Bible. The book is closely connected to the events at Sinai and the instructions God gave after the tabernacle was established.

Leviticus is largely made up of the LORD speaking to Moses and giving instructions for Israel’s worship, priesthood, sacrifices, purity, holy days, and daily life.

This matters because Leviticus is not random religious law. It shows how God graciously provides a way for His people to live near His presence while learning reverence, holiness, atonement, and obedience.
