Proverbs 24:1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

Proverbs 24:2 For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

Proverbs 24:3 Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:

Proverbs 24:4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

Proverbs 24:5 A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

Proverbs 24:6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Proverbs 24:7 Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.

Proverbs 24:8 He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

Proverbs 24:9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

Proverbs 24:10 If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.

Proverbs 24:11 If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain;

Proverbs 24:12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

Proverbs 24:13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:

Proverbs 24:14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

Proverbs 24:15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place:

Proverbs 24:16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

Proverbs 24:17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:

Proverbs 24:18 Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

Proverbs 24:19 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked:

Proverbs 24:20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

Proverbs 24:21 My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:

Proverbs 24:22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

Proverbs 24:23 These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

Proverbs 24:24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:

Proverbs 24:25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.

Proverbs 24:26 Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.

Proverbs 24:27 Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

Proverbs 24:28 Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.

Proverbs 24:29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.

Proverbs 24:30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

Proverbs 24:31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.

Proverbs 24:32 Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.

Proverbs 24:33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

Proverbs 24:34 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.

Verse-by-Verse Study

Proverbs 24:1

Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

Study: Wicked people may appear successful for a season, but wisdom refuses to envy them. Spiritually, envy can pull the heart toward compromise. Practically, choosing the wrong company slowly shapes character and direction.

Proverbs 24:2

For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

Study: Evil begins in the heart before it appears in actions. Spiritually, destructive thinking produces destructive living. Practically, listening continually to corrupt speech influences the mind and behavior.

Proverbs 24:3

Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:

Study: Wisdom builds stable lives, homes, and relationships. Spiritually, godly understanding creates lasting foundations. Practically, healthy families, strong work, and fruitful lives are built intentionally through wisdom and discipline.

Proverbs 24:4

And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

Study: Knowledge fills life with valuable things beyond money alone. Spiritually, wisdom enriches the soul. Practically, understanding produces stability, peace, order, and fruitful living.

Proverbs 24:5

A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

Study: Wisdom creates true strength. Spiritually, knowledge of God strengthens the inner man. Practically, wise decisions often accomplish more than raw force, emotion, or impulse.

Proverbs 24:6

For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Study: Wise counsel protects against unnecessary failure. Spiritually, humility seeks guidance instead of trusting self alone. Practically, important decisions should not be made in isolation when godly counsel is available.

Proverbs 24:7

Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.

Study: Foolish people reject wisdom because they cannot grasp its value. Spiritually, pride keeps many from truth. Practically, a fool often lacks the wisdom needed to speak properly in places of leadership, judgment, or responsibility.

Proverbs 24:8

He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

Study: People who plan evil become known for corruption. Spiritually, wicked intentions matter to God. Practically, character is eventually revealed through repeated choices, schemes, and patterns.

Proverbs 24:9

The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

Study: Sin begins in the thoughts before becoming action. Spiritually, God sees the heart and mind. Practically, scornful people poison relationships, reject correction, and destroy trust.

Proverbs 24:10

If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.

Study: Adversity reveals spiritual and emotional strength. Spiritually, trials expose what a person truly trusts in. Practically, perseverance is developed before difficult seasons arrive.

Proverbs 24:11

If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain;

Study: Wisdom acts when lives are in danger. Spiritually, indifference toward injustice displeases God. Practically, people are called to intervene where possible instead of ignoring suffering, danger, or oppression.

Proverbs 24:12

If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

Study: God knows the motives and awareness of every heart. Spiritually, excuses do not hide truth from the LORD. Practically, personal responsibility cannot be escaped through denial, silence, or pretending not to know.

Proverbs 24:13

My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:

Study: Honey represents something good, nourishing, and delightful. Spiritually, wisdom should be desired like sweetness to the soul. Practically, healthy truth benefits life even when discipline is required to receive it.

Proverbs 24:14

So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

Study: Wisdom brings lasting reward and hope. Spiritually, godly understanding nourishes the soul. Practically, wise living creates long-term fruit, steady expectation, and confidence that is not easily cut off.

Proverbs 24:15

Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place:

Study: The wicked often target righteous people unfairly. Spiritually, God watches over His people. Practically, attacking those who walk uprightly brings eventual judgment and exposes the heart of the attacker.

Proverbs 24:16

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

Study: The righteous may fall repeatedly, but they rise again through God’s help. Spiritually, failure is not the end for the just. Practically, perseverance and repentance separate the righteous from the wicked.

Proverbs 24:17

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:

Study: Wisdom refuses to celebrate another person’s downfall. Spiritually, pride and revenge displease God. Practically, compassion and restraint reveal maturity, even when the person falling has acted like an enemy.

Proverbs 24:18

Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

Study: God examines not only actions but attitudes. Spiritually, rejoicing in judgment can displease the LORD. Practically, bitterness and personal vengeance damage the heart and can shift the focus away from God’s justice.

Proverbs 24:19

Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked:

Study: Wickedness may appear to prosper temporarily, but wisdom remains steady. Spiritually, trust in God removes envy and frustration. Practically, focusing constantly on evil people steals peace and direction.

Proverbs 24:20

For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

Study: Evil has an end. Spiritually, the wicked do not escape God’s judgment forever. Practically, temporary success without righteousness eventually collapses and leaves no lasting reward.

Proverbs 24:21

My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:

Study: Wisdom honors the LORD and respects rightful authority. Spiritually, reverence toward God shapes respect for order. Practically, constant rebellion and instability often pull people into unnecessary danger and ruin.

Proverbs 24:22

For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

Study: Judgment can come unexpectedly upon the rebellious. Spiritually, those who resist God’s order walk in danger. Practically, instability follows people who constantly stir rebellion and chaos.

Proverbs 24:23

These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

Study: Justice must remain impartial. Spiritually, God does not approve of favoritism. Practically, truth should not be altered because of wealth, influence, status, or personal relationships.

Proverbs 24:24

He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:

Study: Calling evil good corrupts justice. Spiritually, God opposes false judgment. Practically, leaders and witnesses who protect wickedness lose trust, damage communities, and invite public reproach.

Proverbs 24:25

But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.

Study: Correcting evil brings blessing and honor. Spiritually, truth protects people from destruction. Practically, courageous honesty benefits society, strengthens justice, and helps preserve what is right.

Proverbs 24:26

Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.

Study: Honest and wise answers are valuable. Spiritually, truthful speech reflects wisdom. Practically, clear and faithful communication builds trust, respect, and peace.

Proverbs 24:27

Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

Study: Wisdom plans and prepares before building. Spiritually, order and stewardship matter to God. Practically, proper preparation creates long-term stability and protects people from rushing into responsibility without a foundation.

Proverbs 24:28

Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.

Study: False testimony harms others and dishonors God. Spiritually, truthfulness matters deeply to the LORD. Practically, deceptive speech destroys trust, damages reputations, and creates injustice.

Proverbs 24:29

Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.

Study: Personal revenge is not wisdom. Spiritually, retaliation feeds bitterness and pride. Practically, responding to evil with evil continues cycles of conflict and destruction.

Proverbs 24:30

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

Study: Laziness eventually becomes visible. Spiritually, neglect produces decay. Practically, what is ignored long enough eventually falls apart, whether it is work, responsibility, family, faith, or stewardship.

Proverbs 24:31

And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.

Study: Neglect slowly destroys productivity and beauty. Spiritually, spiritual laziness creates disorder. Practically, little compromises over time create major consequences, and broken walls reveal a lack of faithful care.

Proverbs 24:32

Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.

Study: Wise people learn from what they observe. Spiritually, instruction can come through everyday life. Practically, paying attention to consequences teaches valuable lessons before you repeat the same mistake.

Proverbs 24:33

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

Study: Small amounts of laziness repeated consistently become dangerous. Spiritually, compromise often grows gradually. Practically, discipline matters in daily habits because small neglects can become large losses.

Proverbs 24:34

So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.

Study: Poverty and lack often follow persistent neglect and laziness. Spiritually, wisdom values diligence and stewardship. Practically, failing to maintain responsibilities eventually creates hardship that can arrive suddenly and forcefully.
